Suriname tijdelijke zonder internet door kabelbreuk

Akhielesh Mahabier

Route America II onderzeese glasvezelkabel

FIBER OPTIC CABLE LINKS GUYANA-SURINAME

Caribbean Update: March, 2000 issue

A joint telecommunications project between Guyana and Suriname, part of a link with the Americas, will provide telephone users with cheaper and faster access to international circuits, reports CANA (January 24, 2000):

Both countries recently cooperated in laying an underwater fiber optic cable in the Corentyne River, which separates them, making it possible, for the first time, to link the telecommunications sectors of countries of the Americas. The link between Guyana and its Dutch-speaking CARICOM neighbor, was executed by engineers and technicians of Telesur, the national phone firm of Suriname, Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Co. (GT&T) specialists, and other experts from the U.S. Caribbean Contractors (UCC), another Surinamese company;

The US$5.5 million cable link is part of the "Americas2" program, a consortium of 25 telecommunications companies. The link commences in the U.S., and extends to other countries, including Puerto Rico, St. Croix, Curacao, Martinique, Trinidad & Tobago, Venezuela, Brazil and French Guiana.
